Quick lesson in Welsh – on the slopes of Portsdown Hill!
Few people knew anything much about Leanne Woods until she appeared on the recent General Election leaders’ debates and they discovered she was at the head of Plaid Cymru.
Leanne is the first leader of the Welsh nationalists not to speak Welsh, although she is learning. And, on the basis that if she’s still learning and lives in Wales so it’s reasonable to assume that most people in the Portsmouth area don’t speak Welsh either, here’s a helping hand with a bit of translation.
New on the market in Hilltop Crescent at Cosham is a house called Ty Gwyn. It translates as White House. Even if a picture doesn’t speak 1,000 words, as it’s often said it should, here’s proof that it can speak two – and in a foreign language!
This imposing four bedroom house is an elevated cul-de-sac and displays many of the features typical of homes built in the 1930s with its double height and tile hung front bay, cat slide roof to one side, and curved brick arch forming a porch to shield the front door.
Inside, it has kept many period fittings such as fire surrounds, cornices, and picture rails but it also has a good sprinkling of modern touches that do not detract from the overall character of the house.
Among those contemporary extras are en-suite shower rooms for both the master and second bedrooms – there is a further family bathroom with a separate cloakroom on the first and ground floors serving the rest of the accommodation, which includes a fourth bedroom or hobby room on the second floor.
On the ground floor, the kitchen has been refitted and now opens to a conservatory connecting it to a sun lounge added behind the dining room, which opens into it through French windows set between half-height windows.
At the front of the house, wisteria drapes over the garden wall, behind which is a brick-paved turning area and side driveway leading to the rear garage.
Although set on the slopes of Portsdown Hill, Hilltop Crescent has easy access to local shopping amenities, bus routes, and recreation grounds and is within the catchment of both Court Lane and Springfield Schools.
